Ohio Chest Physicians

Lungs are complicated organs - so when evaluating them, doctors need to be thorough and review every part of their functionality. Fortunately, Pulmonary Function Tests can help. Pulmonary Function Tests, or PFTs, measure how well your lungs are working. They include procedures that measure lung size and air flow, as well as how much oxygen you're taking in and carbon dioxide you're letting go. Together, these tests can help doctors review your health and provide care that targets specific problems as needed.

If you or a loved one are struggling with pulmonary health issues, it’s important to contact a pulmonary specialist for evaluation and treatment. That’s where we come in. Formed in January of 1997, Ohio Chest Physicians, LTD., is a thriving independent practice focused on pulmonary health. Most importantly, we will do all we can to provide you with the best care possible!

FAQs on Pulmonary Function Tests

What is Pulmonary Function Testing?

Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are noninvasive tests that doctors use to evaluate how well a patient's lungs are working. These tests can measure:

  • lung volume
  • lung capacity
  • rates of airflow
  • gas exchange

By evaluating these key points, doctors can determine the health and functionality of a patient's lungs. Lowered performance numbers can also help doctors pinpoint specific lung issues and disorders.

Why Might I Need Pulmonary Function Testing?

PFTs can be helpful for both healthy and ill patients.

In healthy individuals, they can be used as part of a routine physical, helping to paint a fuller picture of health and offering insights into what needs to be done early to prevent future problems.

Additionally, PFTs may be used to check lung function before surgery or other procedures in patients who have lung or heart problems, who are smokers, or who have other health conditions.

PFTs can also be used to diagnose a variety of pulmonary-related health issues, including:

  • Allergies
  • Infections of the lungs
  • Internal trauma
  • Chronic lung conditions (i.e. asthma, emphysema, or chronic bronchitis)
  • Asbestosis
  • Restrictive airway problems
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Scleroderma
